RPG Experience: Two years in the Harry Potter fandom.

THE CHARACTER
FULL NAME: Hermione Jean Granger.
BIRTHDAY: September 19th.
PLACE OF BIRTH: London, England.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Although Hermione, just like any girl her age, gets crushes she tends to try to keep her focus on her studies and on friendships rather than romance. As far as sexual orientation goes, unlike nearly everything else, Hermione hasn't quite figured it all out yet.
BLOOD STATUS: Muggle-born.
THOUGHTS ON BLOOD PURITY/MUGGLES: Hermione is extremely proud of her muggle parents and her blood status. She's not afraid to speak out on the rights of muggle-borns and other groups and believes strongly that blood status has absolutely no bearing on magical skill or ability. Although she is sometimes taunted for being a "mudblood", she takes it all with stride, or at least tries her best to, and secretly takes pleasure in outshining all the pure-bloods who tease her, especially in Dark Arts classes.

HOUSE AND YEAR: Gryffindor, Sixth Year.
WAND: Vine, 10 & 3/4 inches, dragon heartstring.
BOGGART: Professor Gryffindor informing her she failed all her examinations.
PATRONUS: Otter. This animal symbolizes curiosity, feminine power, empathy and helpfulness.
CLASSES: Arithmancy, Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, the Dark Arts, History of Magic, and Ancient Runes.
+POSITION: Prefect.

PERSONALITY:
Hermione is a very friendly girl even if she isn't the most popular. She tries to be nice to just about everyone, even sometimes giving people the benefit of the doubt or her trust that don't really deserve it. She's not naive or really that easily fooled, she just strongly believes in second chances. That being said, she might forgive but she usually doesn't tend to forget. She has a fantastic memory, after all. She is true to her friends, and keeps their secrets confidently. Once she believes in you, she believes in you entirely. She is loyal to her friends, her house, and to Hogwarts. Hermione would do anything for those closest to her.

She's very intelligent and very clever. There's not much she doesn't know or can't catch on to when it comes to class work. She's especially good at Charms, and is usually the first one in class to grasp new material. There's certainly nothing wrong with getting good marks and working hard but at times Hermione can be a bit overzealous, and maybe just a bit too enthusiastic in class. She can also be a bit boastful and has no problem correcting people if she's right and they're wrong. Being as logical as she is, she knows exactly why some people find her a bit irritating. She is quite a bit tougher than she appears outwardly, and can handle most situations thrown her way with dignity.

She may not be the bravest Gryffindor, but Hermione has an adventurous side, she just tends to do most of her exploring and adventuring in her books. She knows the library of Hogwarts like the back of her hand. She has an eye for detail, and that coupled with a great memory and logical thinking, she tends to figure out things that many others might miss or overlook. She pieces things together in ways some others wouldn't even see the connection through. It makes her an invaluable partner for group work or group projects. Her logical side allows her to look past her emotions and get to the bottom of a situation, whatever it may be, but that being said she can still be quite and emotional girl at times. Especially when it comes to someone or something she is very passionate about.

She tries to remain calm and collected in most situations if she can help it, she's not the same twelve year old first year who used to cry in the girls bathroom. She's a lot stronger than she used to be emotionally and having Cedric and Lily as a strong support system has really done a lot for Hermione's confidence. She used to get a lot more upset about bullies when she was without friends, and but she has actually developed a rather thick skin over the years. She prefers to avoid violence, but if push comes to shove then she's not entirely against throwing a punch or jinxing someone if they really tick her off, and she knows a few good ones. She has to be really angry to let something like that slip though, as Hermione hates breaking the rules and especially hates getting caught breaking the rules.

When it comes time for revision and examinations, Hermione's otherwise calm exterior is easily broken. During these times Hermione runs herself completely ragged. Exam time is absolutely no time for time for fun and games in her book. She has very little patience for people who don't take their own work seriously. Especially those who slack off and then expect her to help them at the last minute. She has no problem helping anyone who needs it, just as long as they're willing to put in the effort and do the majority of their own workload.

Her interest in helping other extends far beyond academics. She's really a good person to have as a friend, she's quite resourceful, and if you need something figured out or researched then Hermione's your girl. She's not only good at helping people, she's a very compassionate person and really enjoys lending a hand. She believes in equality among all creatures, magical and non-magical, but she's quite realistic about it. She knows that would only ever happen in a perfect world.

Working as a Prefect, she takes her responsibility with the utmost seriousness and isn’t afraid to bust people if she sees them doing something wrong. She especially hates seeing older students picking on the first and second years. She’s been there, she knows what it feels like. She might be a little more reluctant if the House Points are particularly close, but she even has no problem busting fellow Gryffindors if they misbehave enough. Even if she does hate to see Gryffindor lose those points. She has quite the bit of house pride and tries to make it to all of the Quidditch games, even if she doesn't quite get all of the hype of the sport.

It irritates Hermione quite a bit when people don’t see things her way or care about things she thinks are important, such as the mistreatment of house elves for example. She gets quite upset with the fact that no one, except perhaps her friends who she suspects are just humoring her, seem to care about them like she does. She stubbornly refuses to hear any such talk that house elves actually enjoy the work they do.

STRENGTHS: Logical-thinking, remembering random knowledge, trivia, cleverness, learning new things, charms, non-verbal spells, problem solving, strong work ethic, book smart, courageous (even if she sometimes has to fake it), loyal, ambitious, and very outspoken.

WEAKNESSES: Insecure (despite acting like a know-it-all), terrified of failure, stresses herself out, serious, flying and fear of heights, and difficulty making friends.

LIKES: Hogwarts, books, studying/revising, knowing as much as she can, her classes, getting top grades, getting praised by teachers, earning house points, being a prefect, Charms, Crookshanks, the theatre, the library, piano and classical music, the smell of parchment, friendship, traveling, following the rules (most of the time anyway), Arithmancy, Gryffindor House Pride, Hogwarts: A History, knitting house-elf clothing.

DISLIKES: Mistreatment of house elves, rude people, pure-blood supremacy, bigots, people who goof around in class, illegal drugs, failing (or anything less than her personal best), worrying and disappointing her parents, Divination, Dementors, The Forbidden Forest, flying, and when she can't find the answer she's looking for.

PERSONAL GOALS: Hermione's goals are to be the best student and Prefect she can possibly be, as well as continuing the fight against the mistreatment of house elves. She also very much hopes to be chosen as Head Girl in her seventh year.

PARENTS: Dr. Thomas Granger and Dr. Susan Granger.
THEIR RELATIONSHIP: Hermione's parents, who are both dentists and both muggles, met in college. They both attended the Dental Institute at King's College in London, where they dated on and off. However they both took their studies quite serious and were often very competitive and a bit argumentative with each other. It might have been love at first sight but they definitely didn't let it show. After graduating Thomas and Susan went their separate ways but were soon reunited, being hired to work at the same dental office.

They've been married for nearly twenty-five years now, and they are still as in love with each other as the day they were married. They have a fantastic relationship, they rarely fight or argue with one another and each is extremely supportive of the other, even if at heart they both still have an extremely competitive nature. They are about as normal as they come and live a quiet but happy life in the same suburb in the same house they moved into after their wedding.

SIBLINGS: N/A, Hermione is an only child.
FAMILY DYNAMICS: The Granger family is about as normal as you can get, apart of course from their witch daughter. Both being muggles, they were of course quite shocked to learn their daughter was a witch but they were never the less as proud and supportive as they had always been of her. They had always considered their daughter just a bit odd but still an extremely bright and friendly child. Learning what she was definitely helped to account for her oddities and the strange experiences they'd previously been unable to explain.

Hermione's family has always been very keen on academics and they have passed on their strong work ethic. It is from them that Hermione not only gets her strong eagerness to learn and dedication to studies but also her fear of failing. Her parents are quite brilliant themselves and have always expected a lot from their daughter. Although they've never had to say it, because even in muggle primary despite trouble making friends, Hermione has always been an excellent student.

She's always felt she needed to live up to their high expectations even if they never actually placed any on her verbally. Her grades have never faltered and she's never been one to get into too much trouble. Yes, they were always supportive of her but she's fairly certain it's only because she never really messed up. She has never gave them a reason to be anything but the proudest of proud parents.

They were never overly strict with Hermione, they never fought or yelled in front of her. In muggle primary school, they were always there for every school play or concert. Though they worked quite hard, they never let it take away from time spent with Hermione. She wasn't raised by nannies or anything of the like, her parents were always the ones who raised her from day one. They read to her nightly, even while she was still in the womb, and they had family game nights and loved traveling together over Christmas and summer holidays.

Coming from an upper middle class family, they always did quite well for themselves. Despite any money they may have had, her parents never spoiled Hermione, instead teaching her not only the important of dealing with her money responsibly, but also teaching her to be humble and appreciative of everything she had.

Since getting over the initial shock, the Grangers have really settled into Hermione being a witch and though it took a bit longer, they've also adjusted to her being away at school the majority of the time. Although have no problems with the magical world, they tend not to intertwine too much. Hermione does most of her shopping for school supplies alone or with friends. Her parents only came with her to Diagon Alley the first couple of times, but they have always made sure to see her off and pick her up promptly at King's Cross.

Even though Hermione's parents miss her greatly, they have really let Hermione make her own choices about how she balances the muggle and magical worlds. She still visits them as often as possible and they send owls back and forth throughout the year but for the past few years Hermione has spent a majority of her holidays on Cedric's farm with him and Lily.

PERSONAL HISTORY:
Hermione had a fairly happy childhood before attending Hogwarts. She was a very pleasant baby and an equally pleasant child. Her parents would describe her as a blessing and an absolute delight. They claim she rarely even cried as an infant, but they might be just a little bit biased. She hit all of the major milestones early, crawling at six months, walking at ten, and by two she had quite the extensive vocabulary.

Hermione excelled academically in muggle primary but did not do so well socially. She was known by the majority of her peers as a teacher's pet, and it was no wonder, she acted the part quite well. Hermione would always be the first to answer every question, waving her arm eagerly in the air, always sitting in the front of the class and never getting anything but top marks. She spent her lunch breaks alone in the library or would just find a quiet corner to sit and read. The Grangers noticed very early on that something was a bit odd or different about their daughter, and not just her high level of intelligence.

The earliest sign the Grangers recall was although Hermione's hair was normally quite frizzy, they had noticed it had a tendency of getting particularly bushy when she was upset. Once when she was five, and was learning to drive a bike, she fell off and broke her arm in three places. In understandably agonizing pain, Hermione screamed and cried louder and harder than her parents had ever heard from her before, and coincidentally her hair looked as if had she stuck a wet finger into an electrical socket. The Grangers were sure it had to be related to the weather and when they later noticed a toy moving by it's own accord, with Hermione playing nearby, it simply had to be their imaginations.

Of all ways, a perfectly reasonable explanation came to them by owl in the summer just before Hermione's twelfth birthday. They were nearly as suprised to see the bird tapping at the window as they were to hear the news he brought. The letter attached to one of his legs informed the Grangers that Hermione had been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Hermione was in fact a witch. It also stated that they should be expecting a visit from a school representative to answer their questions and explain things further. They would be arriving within a few days by a way they called apparation. All three Grangers waited eagerly, with not a clue what they could possibly see or hear next.

Hermione, who was normally a fairly calm child, was immediately bouncing off the of walls with excitement. Her parents were undoubtedly a bit more worried by the news. Who wouldn't be really? They never, however, let their worries or doubts get in the way of Hermione's happiness. They were proud of her and trusted that their daughter would follow the rules and use magic responsibly.

About a week later, the representative from Hogwarts arrived to explain everything about the school. They were told that they would need to go to get her books from a place called Diagon Alley, and how to get onto Platform 9 and 3/4 at King's Cross station. The wizard also assured both Susan and Thomas that Hermione would be perfectly safe, that the school was protected in many ways and that they as muggles were sworn to secrecy about all of it. Hermione had composed a complete list of questions before his arrival and made sure to ask them all. Taking in all of it and even scribbling down a few notes.

Visiting Diagon Alley for the first time had to be one of the happiest and most exciting moments in Hermione's young life. They entered through the Leaky Cauldron, needing some assistance from the barman, who by the looks on their faces, could tell it was their first time. They had all wondered how they never noticed an entire village hidden in the middle of downtown and the bartender had been happy to explain how it was hidden from muggle eyes and how they were only allowed to enter because they were accompanying Hermione.

She ran around Diagon Alley like a kid in a candy store, ironic considering the actual candy shop in Diagon Alley had to be the last thing on her mind. She had to check out every store and bought nearly every book she could about Hogwarts and the magical world, on top of all the books on her school list. She had to know all she possibly could before she got there.

From the second the Grangers made it back to the car, Hermione's nose hit the book. She barely stopped reading for a second before she left for Hogwarts. Hogwarts: A History was by far her favorite, as well as the most informative. She still has her copy today and finds it one of the most useful books she has ever owned, having read it at least a dozen times now. Not to mention twice cover to cover before she even stepped foot inside of the castle.

Hermione, having read about all four of the Hogwarts houses, was sure she was going to be in Ravenclaw but what she really wanted was to be in Gryffindor. She would get her wish, the Sorting Hat lingering on her head for only a few seconds before calling out the decision. She wasn't quite sure why really, just something about it, but Gryffindor seemed like by far the best house. She took her seat along one the Gryffindor table, where a pretty redhead waved her over before scooting down on the bench to give her room. She was beaming. Honestly, she was just happy to be a part of something, anything, bigger than her family, for the first time in her life.

Socially, the first few months at Hogwarts were a little rough for Hermione. She had no friends to speak of really, not much had changed from muggle primary in that respect. She was still picked on just the same, just for being smart. She was called the same old names, except now she had mudblood thrown into the mix and bullies who could use their wands as well as their fists. Despite all of it, Hermione kept her head held high and her nose in the books. Making sure on taking every opportunity to outshine those who picked on her.

Once again the library became her place of solitude. She didn't mind though, it was one of the coolest places she'd ever been. There were rows upon rows of books containing things she couldn't even imagine, millions of topics to learn and explore just right there at her disposal. She probably read more books in her first year than most seventh years and began practically counting down the days until she would finally be given an assignment that would require her to be given permission to visit the restricted section.

So much as Hermione liked to act like the teasing didn't bother her, there were definitely times, especially in her first few months at Hogwarts, when it got to her. For the first time in her life, her parents were not there to comfort her, and she found times where she couldn’t help herself from crying. Usually finding an empty bathroom, since her dorm room was out of the question unless she was absolutely sure none of the other girls were there.

On one particular time, Halloween during her first year, Hermione had heard a group of Gryffindor boys in her year making fun of her. It wasn’t the first time, but it was always harder to hear it coming from her own house. She all but expected it from the Slytherins but the Gryffindors were supposed to be like her family away from home. Brought to tears, Hermione took off to the nearest bathroom and looked herself in the furthest stall to the wall. A redheaded girl, who Hermione recognized immediately as the girl she had sat next to at the sorting feast, heard her sobbing and came in to check on her.

She said her name was Lily, and she told Hermione that she and her friend Cedric were on their way to tell ghost stories. Hermione wasn’t really expecting company, she tried to hide any signs that she was crying. Honestly she had been expecting everyone to still be down at the Halloween feast. Lily saw through her immediately though and with a few comforting words convinced Hermione, a little reluctantly, to tell her what had happened to her. And she was ecstatic when Lily asked her to join her and Cedric.

Cedric, she learned, was a very nice boy from Hufflepuff. He was in his second year, just like Lily was at the time. The three young friends just clicked instantly and have been nearly inseparable ever since. Hermione couldn’t believe it at first, she’d never really had real friends before the two of them. It was certainly a nice change from being alone all of the time. In their sixth and seventh years respectively, the three of them are still going strong but Hermione still doesn’t have a whole lot of other really close friends.

After her first Christmas break during which Hermione traveled to Paris with her parents, she has spent the majority of her other holidays on Cedric’s farm with Lily and the Diggory family. After Hogwarts, it has been like her secondary home away from home.

Academically Hermione has always remained the same bright, attentive student she had always been before Hogwarts. She loved every second of her classes, was getting excellent marks, sometimes even better than most of her classmates raised in wizarding families. She was soon a favorite of most of her teachers. She continued to thrive in all of her lessons, continuing to grow into quite the clever and talented witch. The only classes which ever gave Hermione any real trouble were Flying and Divination, but the latter was only because she found the whole class quite silly and refused to believe in any of it. She actually dropped it after taking it for just a few classes and decided to take Arithmancy in it’s place. Just this past summer she received her O.W.L. grades while staying with the Diggory’s, and was happy to find out that she got an O on all of her O.W.L.’s except the Dark Arts, where she still managed pull off a decent E.

In her forth year she started a very small organization know as S.P.E.W (the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare), and she’s still hopelessly trying to recruit members every year since. She continues to fight the cause even if others are skeptical and reluctant to help her. She often knits clothing for the house-elves of Hogwarts and leaves them laying around the castle in hopes that they will choose to free themselves.

Starting her sixth year, Hermione is planning on continuing to work an as hard as ever, and is planning to work even harder in lessons in the Darks Arts. She prefers the defensive side of the course, but knows that learning the subject as a whole in a must. She is determined to continue showing up her pureblooded peers, and isn't satisfied with the E tarnishing her otherwise perfect exam scores. She's already started to prepare for her N.E.W.T.’s even if there still nearly two years away. She was named a Prefect in her fifth year and still takes her job extremely seriously.

APPEARANCE:
Hermione has brown eyes and brown hair which is quite wavy and at times quite frizzy, sometimes even more so when she's angry. She wears her hair down most of the time but when it gets in her way she'll often pull it back into a bun or ponytail. She will occasionally use Sleekeazy's Hair Potion to tame her hair for special occasions or uses charms to calm major frizz problems, despite acting like she doesn't care much about her own appearance or the physical appearance of others.

She has fair but clear skin and doesn't tend to wear a lot of make-up except on very rare occasions. She was a bit odd looking in the younger grades with her big hair and teeth, and her nose stuck in a book, but now in her sixth year, she has grown into her looks quite a bit. In her third year, Hermione was hit accidentally by the Densaugeo spell, cast from somewhere amongst a group of giggling Slytherins. When the Matron was fixing her teeth she had her bring them up just a bit shorter than they used to be, to a more average size. She later found out it was actually Bellatrix Black who casted the spell, and who still continues to pick on Hermione relentlessly.

She has a bright smile and cute dimples when she really gets laughing but she often has a very serious look about her. She sometimes looks angry when she's really concentrating. Her teeth are extremely white, because growing up with two dentists as parents instilled her with perfect dental hygiene.

Hermione overall size is not very large. She's around average height standing at about 5'6" (hair included) now but was quite short when she started at Hogwarts, having gone through a couple of growth-spurts since then. Her small stature in the younger grades added even more to the effect of her looking like walking hair and teeth. She's glad to have sprouted up a bit. She's fairly skinny but not too skinny. She has some curves now but retained a boyish figure with little to no bust until much later than most of the other girls in her grade.

She dresses quite plain, and while wearing her school robes she very much sticks to conduct, keeping her outfits looking clean, crisp and proper. She wears her Prefect badge everywhere, sometimes even on Holiday, and sometimes forgets her power doesn't extend outside of school. Unlike some other members of the magical world, Hermione grew up with and was raised by muggles so she knows how to dress like them very well. Muggle clothes for Hermione usually include coats, blazers, scarves, sweaters and jeans. She dresses quite modest and isn't really into designer names or caring too much at all about what she wears. Practicality and comfort always come first in her book.

THE ROLE
First person roleplaying sample:
[To Hogwarts Students]

I would just like to remind everyone that S.P.E.W. will be meeting again this Tuesday at 7pm in the courtyard. Last week's turnout was terrible, to say the very least, so I'm hoping to see a few new faces at the upcoming meeting.

We as witches and wizards have been taking advantage of house elves for far too long! I've read all about it! Some of you would surely starve to death without them, would it kill you to show them just a tad more respect and gratitude? They are living, breathing beings just like you and I and as such should be given similar rights.

Here's something to think about, particularly for those of you who like to believe you're above muggles... they abolished slavery in 1833!

Third person roleplaying sample:
Hermione awoke early, just like any other morning and pushing the blankets and curtains aside she slid her feet over the side, and sat on the edge looking around at the other four poster beds. From the looks of it, and Hermione wasn't much surprised by this, her three other roommates were still fast asleep. It was a Saturday morning after all. She reached up trying to push her hair back out of her eyes and off her face, it was always such a wild mess in the morning. She struggled, trying to flatten it out with her hands. It seemed each time she managed to smooth out one spot another one frizzed out in a different direction.

Within a few short moments Hermione had abandoned all attempts to calm her hair without magic, grabbing her wand off the bedside table she tapped it lightly against the side of her head once. Her hair immediately falling just a bit flatter, the tangles and frizz subsiding. Hermione wasn't normally one to care too much about her appearance, if she could help it anyway. It was what was underneath her big mess of hair that should really matter.

She hurried into her weekend clothes and stuffed a couple more text books into her favorite purple handbag. Which, with the extension charm she had placed on it was able to hold all of her book with ease, and then some. She grabbed her large painted GO CEDRIC sign, all adorned with the Hufflepuff Colors that was stored behind her slightly larger Gryffindor banner. In no time at all the sign had too disappeared into the bag and she stowed it away in her pocket, placing her wand in another. She was determined to spend the whole day in the library but Hufflepuff was playing Slytherin, and there was just no way she was going to miss the opportunity to watch Cedric beat them.

She closed the door behind her quietly as to not wake up the others and scurried down the steps from the girls dormitory, and into the common room, which was practically deserted. She climbed effortlessly out through the portrait hole turning and nodding at the groggy-looking Fat Lady as it closed up behind her. She was heading for the Great-Hall, she had a big day in front of her so she'd need a good hearty breakfast. Her parents always said it was the most important meal of the day.

The Great Hall was as scarcely populated as the Gryffindor common room but Hermione was happy to see a few other students out of bed and sitting along the Gryffindor table, she waved and smiled, finding a seat by no one in particular but making sure to save a seat for Lily. Who, knowing her friend, would no doubt be along before too long. She glanced over at the other tables, a few more Ravenclaws were already up getting an early start and a few of the professors were at the head table talking and enjoying an early breakfast.

She grabbed at piece of toast and nibbled at it holding it in one hand, idly tapping her other hand on the table. Needing something to read, the Weekend Prophet or morning owls hadn't arrived yet, she reached into her bag, digging around for quite sometime in it's depths before pulling out her Arithmancy text book.

She flipped to her current page which was carefully marked, like all the other pages she figured would be especially important when revision time came around. Each charmed a different color on the top corner so they are easily distinguishable. Immediately pouring over the page, she blocked out everything else around her trying to take it all in. She'd of course already read it, twice in fact, but just once more couldn't hurt before she started her assignment. Without taking her eyes off of the page, she reached lazily with her wand, the serving spoon lifting off the table she placed a large spoonful of scramble eggs and a few sausages on her plate.

Plot Ideas/Pairings/etc: Cedric and Lily's players and I have some plans for our brainy little trio. Plus I'd love for someone to get Hermione to have a bit of fun, take her nose out of the books a little and bring out her adventurous side. I also think it'd be kind of cool to do some event similar to a triwizard tournament but inter-houses instead?
